Master in Special Educational Needs, Disability, and Inclusion
The MA in Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion, offered by DEI College in Thessaloniki, aims to prepare students for professional employment in the field of special education and inclusive education. The program is designed by the University of Sunderland to help students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to support individuals with special educational needs and disabilities in various educational settings.

The Postgraduate programe in Special Educational Needs, Disability, and Inclusion is aimed to candidates who:
- Wish to acquire practical knowledge and skills in supporting individuals with special educational needs and disabilities.
- Aim for professional development in the field of special education and education in the private and public sectors.
- Want to contribute to the development and implementation of inclusive education programs.
- Have a passion for creating an inclusive world, actively improving the lives of individuals with special needs while promoting social awareness and empathy.
Programme Structure
The Master’s program in Special Education lasts one year and includes the following courses:
- Introduction to Critical Thinking
- Research Methods in Education
- Approaches to Learning for Learners with Special and Additional Needs
- Supporting Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Needs
- Dissertation
The program has a twelve-month duration, and courses begin in October-November and January-February of each academic year.
1st Term
Introduction to Criticality – Introduction to Critical Thinking
Expand your knowledge in critical thinking and explore its significance within the broader educational context. Develop self-evaluation skills, cognitive flexibility, creativity, interpretation, and argumentation. Draw upon various theoretical approaches that can later be applied in different educational settings.Research Methods in Education
Explore the principles and practices of conducting educational research, including research design, research paradigms, data collection, management, and analysis, as well as the policy and ethical dimensions involved in educational research. Develop your research skills by engaging with relevant critical literature and examine various approaches to educational research through case studies of current and recent research projects.
2nd Term
- Causes and Implications of Barriers to Learning for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Critically explore the cause of the barriers to learning that SEND needs can engender, including the impact of Government policy, adverse childhood experiences and day–to–day practice within a range of health, education and care contexts. Examine the impact of evidence–based staff knowledge, understanding and skills and the importance of prompt identification and assessment of SEND. Consider the importance of co–production with caregivers, learners with SEND and professional organisations to improve participation and outcomes across the life–course.
Supporting Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Needs
Explore the impact of support and collaboration with children, young people, families, and stakeholders in the field of social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH). Examine mental health and well-being models in relation to diagnosis, treatment guidelines, and their impact on life prospects. Conduct a critical analysis of the rights and needs of children with SEMH difficulties, including challenges resulting from adverse childhood experiences and the impact of school policies and procedures on participation, learning, and preventing school exclusion.MA Thesis or Practice–Based Enquiry Project
Complete a substantial piece of research within your chosen field of study or professional practice, with the support of an allocated supervisor. Gain an in–depth understanding of your specialist area by answering a research question, the proposal for which will have been examined in the Research Methods in Education module.
